Rugby United New York have confirmed the signings of US Eagles flanker Hanco Germishuys and former England age-grade lock Charlie Hewitt for the remainder of the 2020 Major League Rugby season. Both players join with immediate effect and are expected to play against Rugby ATL on Sunday.
Germishuys recently cut ties with the Colorado Raptors after a contract dispute. One of the premier back row forwards in American rugby, the 23-year-old is noted for his powerful ball carrying that has seen him win 21 test caps since 2016. He was part of the USA’s squad at Rugby World Cup 2019.
The transfer of Hewitt comes by complete surprise. He played for the SaberCats in the preseason match against the Tasman Mako having returned from a long-term knee injury that kept him out of the entire 2019 campaign. At 6’7″ (2.01m) and 275lbs (125kg), the 25-year-old adds considerable ballast to the RUNY pack in the absence of Trevor Cassidy. The latter suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung in the opening round loss to New England.
