Germany are champions at Viña del Mar’s Challenger Series

Germany are the champions of the first leg of the World Rugby Challenger Series. The central Europeans won the Rugby Sevens tournament this past weekend at the Estadio Sausalito in Viña del Mar, Chile.

Sixteen countries were involved in the tournament, which is officially the Tier 2 version of the World Sevens Series. The same 16 competitors will play again this coming weekend in the second leg of the series at the Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo, Uruguay.

The top eight performers from the Challenger Series will qualify for the 2021 World Rugby Sevens Series core qualifier in Hong Kong. Germany’s win sees them top of the table with 22 points. They are followed by Hong Kong with 19 and Japan with 17.

Chile were beaten by Japan in the Bronze Final. The 19-7 defeat meant that Los Cóndores finished fourth ahead of Tonga and Zimbabwe who were fifth and sixth placed respectively.

Uruguay improved during the tournament to claim wins over Brazil and Italy. This put them up against Jamaica, whom they defeated 33-0 to finish in ninth position. Colombia defeat both Brazil and Paraguay en route to finishing 13th.
