Jaguares lose at home to Hurricanes

Two matches into the 2020 season and Los Jaguares are 1-1. The Argentine Super Rugby side lost at home to the Hurricanes, 26-23 this evening in Buenos Aires.

The teams both scored two tries, but it was the visitors who were the winners as they crossed for a 78th minute try to claim a late lead and claim four competition points with the victory.

Los Jaguares had appeared to be on course for the win, yet they were below their best. The Argentine side had a hit-and-miss match with the performance being underwhelming with the Hurricanes winning the contact area and scrum, in addition to being superior with the use of width of the field.

The scoring opened with All Black Jordie Barrett landing a penalty from well inside his own half. Domingo Miotti responded with his first for Los Jaguares and then Marcos Kremer bulldoze over to score the game’s first try.

The next try of the match did not come until the second half. Two Barrett penalties made it a 10-9 scoreline, favoring Los Jaguares, at half time.

Miotti opened the second half scoring with a 44th minute penalty. Barrett and Miotti then traded penalties in the remaining scoring of the third quarter.

In the 64th minute it appeared to be game over. Gonzalo Quesada emptied his forwards replacements, a move which improved the scrum. Agustín Creevy’s impact was to be a general at the set-piece as he set-up and scored a try from a rolling-maul off the back of a lineout.

The win was not to be as the Hurricanes were on top for the final 15 minutes and were deserved winners. All Black Ngani Laumape was the instigator in getting his team out of its own 22 an then in breaking through for the move that saw Alex Fidow touching down. Fly half Jackson Garden-Bachop added the conversion to give the Hurricanes a three point lead with a minute remaining. A messy restart saw Los Jaguares knock-on as the full-time siren sounded.

The ending did not come without controversy. With Garden-Bachop lining up the shot at goal, TMO Santiago Borsani alerted referee Rasta Rasivhenge to a forward pass in the lead up to the try. Rasivhenge followed protocol by saying it it too late to check now; replays confirmed it was a forward pass.

Los Jaguares will remain at home for their next match. The round three encounter is to be against the Reds on February 15. The Hurricanes, meanwhile, return to New Zealand for a match on the same day against the Sharks.
