Former England captain Chris Robshaw could be heading to Major League Rugby in 2021. The 33-year-old flanker on Monday confirmed rumors that he will depart long-time club Harlequins at the end of the Premiership season. He is set to arrive stateside on Tuesday for talks with Rugby United New York.
A veteran of 66 tests, Robshaw is one of the most prominent figures in English rugby. He was named captain by then-coach Stuart Lancaster for the 2012 Six Nations and led the national side through the 2015 World Cup. In his 16-year career with Harlequins he has amassed more than 200 Premiership starts.
While more lucrative offers are sure to come from clubs in France and Japan, a move to New York would be beneficial for the career of Robshaw’s wife Camille Kerslake. The classical singer performed in Les Miserables in London and also appeared on stage with world-renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli.
RUNY has also been linked to former Australia winger Drew Mitchell and Racing 92 star Simon Zebo. Mitchell has confirmed that he is undecided on a potential playing return, having announced his retirement in 2017. Zebo, of Ireland and Lions fame, would be a shock addition given his current standing in Europe but could be tempted to join on a sabbatical deal similar to Mathieu Bastareaud.
