Two wins from two on Day One have the Men’s Eagles on track for the Semi Finals at the Sydney Sevens. It was mixed emotions for other two Americas sides, with both Argentina and Canada coming through with one win and one loss.
Ben Pinkelman and Stephen Tomasin each scored twice as the USA cruised past Scotland to open the men’s draw. It was the flyers who did the damage in a rout of Japan, with Carlin Isles notching a hat trick and Perry Baker picking up a double.
Canada started their tournament with a come-from-behind win over Ireland. Their second match did not go as well. Poor discipline and shaky defense cost them dearly as two Joan Losada tries gave Spain the lead before Pol Plà’s decisive score just before halftime.
There was no joy for Los Pumas in their first match against South Africa. The Blitzboks got a hat trick from Angelo Davids and two via namesake Selvyn Davids in the eight-try demolition. It took a pair of late scores from Santiago Mare to save Argentina against Samoa.
Fiji showed a return to form as they thumped New Zealand to top Pool A. South Africa lead in Pool B, while England are the class of Pool D. The USA will square off against Australia on Day Two with the winner qualifying for the final four.
Live broadcasts will be available on the CBC Sports website in Canada, NBC Sports Gold in the USA, and ESPN in Latin and South America.
