Canada Women start strong in Sydney

Canada are in pole position in Women’s Pool B at the end of the first day of the Sydney Sevens. The USA remain in contention for a Semi Final spot despite losing their opening match, while Brazil were defeated in both of their matches against their North American opponents.

A late try from Mereseini Leivere gave Fiji the upset win over the Women’s Eagles in the opening match of the tournament. The USA’s second fixture was a better result, with Stephanie Rovetti’s first career hat trick bettering Bianca Silva’s double for Las Yaras.

The Canadians made relatively easy work of Brazil with five players touching down in a convincing win. Fiji proved more difficult. Three missed conversions left the gap just a single point until Keyara Wardley’s 13th-minute score reduced the tension.

Host team Australia were in blistering form on the opening day, outscoring their opposition 67-0 with France also unbeaten in Pool C. Series leaders New Zealand and England each came through with two wins in Pool A.

The pool stage concludes on Day Two with Brazil facing Fiji and the USA needing a win over Canada to stay alive. Live broadcasts are available on the CBC Sports website in Canada, NBC Sports Gold in the USA, and ESPN in Latin and South America.
