USA and Canada Women unbeaten on Hamilton Day One

Both the USA and Canada came through unbeaten on Day One of the women’s bracket at the Hamilton Sevens. The controversial new format saw the teams playing only twice with their third pool match to be played on Day Two. Brazil meanwhile lost both of their games.

It took nearly six minutes for the first try from Ilona Maher against Russia but Alev Kelter’s score soon after gave the Eagles a comfortable lead that would not be relinquished. Thalia Costa shocked them with an early score for Brazil. In response the USA scored six unanswered tries including a double for Stephanie Rovetti.

For the Yaras it was their second game of the day with fatigue likely setting in after a much more positive effort against Australia. Costa had also scored in the second minute but the Australians put four tries on the board before a stoppage time effort from Rafaela Zanellato made for a better end result.

Canada was in fine form throughout on Day One. Britt Benn’s 4th-minute score against Ireland put them ahead with two Kaili Lukan tries pushing them away to a comfortable win. It was even more lopsided against Spain, with captain Ghislaine Landry contributing 18 points via two tries and four conversions.

The second day of action will see Canada take on France, Brazil facing Russia, and the USA up against Australia before the Semi Final seedings are set.

Live broadcasts are available on the CBC Sports website in Canada, NBC Sports Gold in the USA, and ESPN in Latin and South America. A complete fixture list can be seen here.
