Jaguares overwhelm Georgia XV in Mar de Plata

Los Jaguares overwhelmed the Georgia XV, winning 66-3 in Mar del Plata. The match was the first of 2020 for the Argentine Super Rugby franchise and the first home game played away from Buenos Aires. The occasion was a success with a crowd of 18,720.

Gonzalo Quesada’s team controlled the match throughout, leading for the duration of the contest. The first points were scored by Bautista Delguy; the winger completing a try from a turnover. In response the Georgia XV landed a penalty with fly half Revazi Jinchvelashvili kicking the only points of the match for the visitors.

Sharp passing led to the second try, which was scored by flanker Francisco Gorrissen. It came with the Georgia XV lacking know-how in defending the ruck. With spaces open scrum-half, Tomás Cubelli was able to snipe upfield.

Additional first half tries were scored by Hooker Agustin Creevy, fly half Joaquín Díaz Bonilla and left winger Santiago Carreras. It gave Los Jaguares a healthy lead; ensuring a victory before the midway stage of the match.

Not going the way of Los Jaguares in the first half was the scrum. Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro was outmatched, shove backwards and collapsed. His place as the starting loose head for 2020 is under serious threat.

Scoring did not resume quickly after the interval. Instead, both teams rotated their players which slowed down the flow of play. Eventually the scoring opened up for Los Jaguares. Replacements Sebastián Cancelliere (2), Rodrigo Bruni, Santiago Chocobares all scored as did starting second-rower Matías Alemanno.

Los Jaguares and the Georgia XV will play again next Friday. Game two of the series will be played in Buenos Aires’s northern suburb of San Isidro.
