Chile, and Uruguay are to host the new World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series. The competition will begin in February 2020 and see South American hosting legs in Viña del Mar and Montevideo.
The men’s Sevens Challenger Series will consist of 13 teams from all six of the World Rugby defined regions. They are to compete in Viña del Mar, Chile (February 15-16 ), and Montevideo, (February 22-23). This sees the competitions replacing the annual Sudamérica Rugby Sevens events in Viña del Mar, and Punta del Este.
The eight leading core teams after the two legs will advance to the final play-off tournament for a spot in the World Rugby Sevens Series, replacing the bottom placed core team in the World Series in the following season in a promotion and relegation structure.
The thirteen competitors are the top ranked countries that are not already competing in the World Series in the 2019-2020 competition.
The teams are Brazil, Chile, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Portugal, Tonga, Uganda, Uruguay and Zimbabwe. Joining them will be invitational competitors from the Americas – Colombia, Mexico and Paraguay.
The final play-off tournament will be a part of the 2020 Hong Kong Sevens in April 2020. A women’s tournament is also to take place though details have not yet been finalized.
