The Men’s Eagles will miss out on the Cup Quarter Finals for the first time since the 2017-18 season after being halted by the Blitzboks on Day Two of the Cape Town Sevens. Argentina will be the only Americas team in the final eight after Canada’s hopes were snuffed out by New Zealand.
There were no problems to start the day for the USA as they crushed Japan with Madison Hughes scoring two of the six unanswered tries. South Africa were a different proposition, jumping out to a 14-0 lead before Carlin Isles got one back before halftime. Selvyn Davids put the game away in the second half for South Africa. The Eagles matched them with tries to Matai Leuta and Perry Baker, but no conversions from three tries left the USA six points short.
Los Pumas had the same results on Day Two but their Day One win over Canada was enough to earn a Quarter Final spot. Six players touched down, including two for Germán Schulz, as they ran over Wales 45-0. They were competitive but ultimately second best against New Zealand, with Matías Osadczuk and Gastón Revol scoring tries in the 19-14 defeat.
Canada also split their matches but in reverse fashion. New Zealand were far too good with Mike Fuailefau’s try the only points conjured. They ended the day on a high with a 17-14 win over Wales, Theo Sauder’s double combining with a Matt Mullins single to earn the positive result.
Argentina’s path to the Semi Finals will be through France in the second Quarter Final on Day Three. The USA and Canada will each play one further match in 2019, the Eagles facing England for 9th place and the Canadians drawing Australia in the 11th place final.
