Mungo Mason will take a second shot at Major League Rugby after signing with Old Glory DC for the 2020 season. The 24-year-old openside flanker appeared during the 2018 preseason for the San Diego Legion but was unable to secure a visa to take part in the regular season.
Scottish-born but raised in New Zealand, Mason had been playing for the Chicago Lions while attending Chicago-Kent College on a law school exchange from the University of Waikato when he signed for San Diego. An opportunity then arose in Scotland last season and he joined the national sevens squad while also turning out once for Edinburgh in the Guinness Pro 14.
Mason traveled to the Dubai and Cape Town stops on the World Sevens Series as the 13th man but did not make a match appearance. He now turns his focus back to the 15-a-side game and joins a strong back row group that includes Canada ‘A’ cap Travis Larsen, USA international Jamason Fa’anana-Schultz, club captain Josh Brown, and young flankers Nic Mirhashem and Jack McLean.
Meanwhile Old Glory have also signed 26-year-old utility back Mitch MacCartney. The Chesapeake, Virginia, native played collegiate rugby for South Carolina and Wheeling Jesuit before spending last season on a professional contract in Spain with Ciencias. He is capable of covering flyhalf, center, and fullback.
