The Austin Herd have added two more outside backs to their roster for the 2020 Major League Rugby season. Corey Jones joins from Southern Pines in North Carolina and Rodrick Waters makes the move from the West Houston Lions. Both players are 26 years old and new to the league.
Jones is a versatile athlete who has played across the backline in his career though he prefers outside center or fullback. Standing an imposing 6’4″ (1.93m), he played both football and rugby for the Arkansas Razorbacks before committing to rugby full-time. An accomplished sevens player, Jones recently traveled to Germany with a USA Eagles development squad. He will also take over the Team Manager position left vacant by Andrew Suniula’s reassignment to the coaching staff.
Waters was called up for the SaberCats in the preseason but did not see any regular season action. Like Jones he is a crossover athlete, playing collegiate football for Western Colorado. The explosive winger has most recently been playing for the Lions in the Red River conference. He will now suit up for the Austin Blacks when not running with the Herd.
Austin now have several options out wide with newcomers Frank Halai and Enele Malele joining an established group of returnees. Reece Czarnecki, Alex Faison-Donahoe, Peni Tagive, and Zinzan Elan-Puttick are all competing for spots with the versatile Sione Fangaiuiha also covering midfield or wing.
