Americas Rankings – October 14 2019

The completion of the pool stage of RWC 2019 marks the end of the tournament for the Americas. Argentina, Canada, Uruguay, and the USA were all eliminated at the pool stage with Australia, England, France, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa, and Wales securing the eight Quarter Finals placings.

Of the Americas quartet Argentina has already qualified for RWC 2023. They join eleven others in not needing to participate in RWC 2023 qualifiers due to having finished in the top three of their pool in Japan. Canada, Uruguay, and the USA will compete in a new-look Americas qualifying series during the Americas Rugby Championship (ARC).

In the final week of the pool stage of RWC 2023 Argentina, Canada, Uruguay, and the USA all had matches. The first was Argentina vs the USA in Kumagaya. The Argentine win sees them improving their ranking from 76.79 to 78.31 points.

The loss in Kumagaya was the first of two this past week for the USA. The second was on Sunday against Tonga in Osaka. As a result of dropping both matches the Eagles plummet from 13th to 17th in the world. They have gone from 71.69 points to 68.10, representing a drop behind Tonga, Georgia, Samoa, and Spain.

Canada played against South Africa on Tuesday and were due to then face Namibia on Sunday. The former match was a heavy defeat but has not implications on the rankings. The latter fixture was cancelled which saw an opportunity missed for improve in the rankings. Canada remain 22nd, and Namibia 23rd in the world.

Uruguay finish RWC 2019 as 18th in the world. They were the one team from the Americas who achieved their goal for the tournament. The heroics against Fiji will go down as one of the great upsets in RWC history. In their farewell match on Sunday they performed very well against Wales, trailing 21-13 with less than 10 minutes remaining. The result of the match has no impact on the rankings.
