Rugby World Cup 2007 would be a very different tournament to that of RWC 2003. With more even match scheduling it would be a more competitive event and there would be far more unpredictability in the results.
Unlike RWCs 1999 and 2003 there would be three rather than four competitors from the Americas. Missing to on qualifying was Uruguay who lost to Portugal in repechage.
Argentina, Canada, and the USA were all involved again with Los Pumas being the team remembered most. The South Americans would win their pool and then their Quarter Final to reach the Semi Finals for the first time. They would be beaten by South Africa but would rebound to win the Bronze Final.
Canada would be in a position to win multiple matches before exiting the tournament on a low note. Their southern neighbors would also miss out on achieving their objectives though Taku Ngwenya’s try against South Africa lives on as the best from the tournament and among the greatest in RWC history.
RWC 2007 would see upset results both in the pool stage as well as in the Quarter Finals. If similar unpredictability can transpire at RWC 2019 in Japan then the sport will benefit tremendously.
