Jaguares XV Win Currie Cup First Division Title

Los Jaguares XV are the 2019 Currie Cup First Division Champions. The Argentine side won the first division title by defeating the Griffons 27-13 this afternoon in South Africa.

In becoming champions in South Africa the accomplishment marks the second time that an Argentine team has done so with the first having been the Vodacom Cup title won by Los Pampas XV in 2011.

Today’s title saw Los Jaguares XV playing the better rugby. They would control the majority of the 80 minutes of play with the most troubling period being early on in the match.

The scoring began with a penalty to either side to set-up an early 3-3 scoreline. Los Jaguares XV then scored the opening try with center Tomás Cubilla, who today played wing, touching down. Domingo Miotti converted to give the Argentine side a 10-3 lead.

28 minutes in and the Griffons added a second penalty. Like the first it was slotted by fly half Robert Petzer. With it the South Africans were 11 five points behind, the closest they would get for the remainder of the contest.

The Argentines responded with their second try. Scoring was fullback Facundo Cordero who dazzled his way over for a superb try. Miotti added the extras to make it a 17-6 scoreline at half time.

In the second half it took twenty minutes for further scoring. When Los Jaguares XV pressed the Griffons from a five meter scrum they would be rewarded with a penalty try. It put them 18 points ahead with a quarter of the match remaining.

The Griffons would score in response, doing so in the 66th minute. N 8 Cody-Anthony Basson scored with Petzer landing the additional two points.

Los Jaguares XV did not panic. They remained in firm control and would dictate territory. They frustrated the Griffons and were rewarded a penalty from which Miotti kicked three points to seal the win and the title.
