During the final weeks of waiting for Rugby World Cup 2019 to arrive Americas Rugby News will be taking a look back at some moments from past RWCs involving competitors from the Americas. First up as the feature Team of the Week is Uruguay.
In the final day of the series the feature is Rodrigo Capó Ortega’s try against Samoa from RWC 2003. Known by rugby purists for winning the Top 14 twice with Castres, the highly distinguished second-rower would score against Samoa in his youth playing at N8.
Capó Ortega would play all four matches for his country at RWC 2003 at the back of the scrum. He did so having debuted for Uruguay in 2000 as a second-rower and remaining there until 2002. While from 2003-2009 he would play N8 for his country.
RWC 2003 would be the only Rugby World Cup for Capó Ortega though he would captain the side in the RWC 2007 qualifiers and come out of international retirement for the RWC 2015 qualifiers against Russia, and RWC 2019 qualifiers against Canada. In doing so he would help his country successfully qualify only to miss both RWC tournaments.
Against Samoa in RWC 2003 Capó Ortega would score after Uruguay pressured a Samoan scrum feed. Samoa’s Steve So’oialo was under pressure from Teros flanker Marcelo Gutierez and would lose control. Capó Ortega picked up the loose ball and ran to the line, getting past the attempted tackle of fullback Tanner Vili.
