Brazil falls to 9th in Americas

Following a 2-0 series loss against Germany Brazil’s World Ranking has suffered with the world’s fifth largest country falling to 45th in the world. The new ranking sees Brazil falling behind both Trinidad & Tobago and Colombia to be 9th in the Americas.

Prior to facing Germany Brazil was already ranked below Paraguay. Falling further yet retaining a place in the Americas Rugby Cup, ahead of lower ranked countries, begs the question of how to incorporate others. While it is yet to be confirmed it has previously been stated by Agustín Pichot that a second division will be established down the track.

Brazil, though, could yet end the year ranked higher. The Tupis will be facing Colombia this coming Saturday in a test match in São Paulo. Colombia enter the match in fine shape having recently won the South American B Championship by defeating Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela. Brazil, in contrast, are winless in 2015.

Also playing rugby this weekend were Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Panama. None of them, however, are listed in the World Rankings. Costa Rica is nonetheless an affiliated member of World Rugby. Fellow Central American republics Belize, Honduras and Nicaragua are others who could become future members.
