Newly-promoted Ampthill have signed a pair of Argentines for their first ever campaign in the RFU Championship. Flyhalf Serafin Bordoli and No8 Facundo Domínguez, both Pumitas caps at u20 level, will get their first tastes of professional rugby in England.
Bordoli, 24, has spent the past three seasons in Italy. He signed a two-year deal with Zebre in 2016 before a brief return home to the Olivos club in Buenos Aires. Calvisano came calling in March and Bordoli played eight games in the Eccellenza to close out the 2018-19 season.
For Domínguez, this will be his first foray into professional rugby. The 22-year-old also arrives from Olivos, three years removed from his participation the 2016 World Junior Championship. At 6’3″ (1.90m) and 235lbs (106kg), he boasts a good mix of size and athleticism but has found his opportunities limited in Argentina with the Jaguares the only professional side on offer.
The timing of the moves is of note with the new South American professional league – Súper Liga Americana de Rugby – set to launch in 2020, though details remain cloudy. Bordoli and Domínguez have instead opted for the certainty and experience of European rugby at least in he short term.
