Currie Cup First Division Preview – Boland Kavaliers vs Jaguares XV

In game two of the brief history of the Jaguares XV the Argentine development side will go up against the Boland Kavaliers in Potchefstroom.

The match follows the debut of the Jaguares XV last weekend against the Down Touch Griffons. The match was high-scoring with the Argentine team running out 50-43 winners.

For round two Jaguares XV Head Coach Ignacio Fernández Lobbe has added Super Rugby players Juan Cruz Mallía and Santiago Carreras into there starting line-up. Both men performed very well under Gonzalo Quesada this year but they will be playing in different positions against Boland.

In a potential sign of RWC 2019 plans Cruz Mallía will play at inside center. A natural outside center who was mostly fullback for Los Jaguares this year, Cruz Mallía will play in a position lacking clear depth for Japan. As it stands Jerónimo de la Fuente’s deputy is the starting outside center Matías Orlando.

Carreras is a natural fullback though played Super Rugby on the wing. His tremendous performances as a rookie mean that his inclusion for RWC 2019 would not be a major surprise. His selection and that of Crúz Mallía is notable with Bautista Ezcurra named to play on the right wing.

Additional changes to face Boland include Martín Elias moving to fly half to play in place of Teo Castiglioni; while Lucio Sordoni arrives from Super Rugby to take a spot among the replacements.

The Boland Kavaliers were also winners in round one of the Currie Cup First Division. They defeated the Border Bulldogs 31-20 at King Edward Stadium in Montagu.

Poland go into the match with one change. It comes in the form of former Springbok Bolla Conradie who has been named on the bench as the replacement Scrumhalf after recovering from a calf injury.

The match will be the first between the Boland Kavaliers and the Jaguares XV. While the teams are new to one-another there is actually prior history with the Pampas XV having played against Boland in the Vodacom Cup.

The first relevant match was in 2010 with Boland winning 26-13. The Pampas XV would more than make up for it with a 65-23 triumph, among others.

With two winning teams from the opening round facing-off this Saturday’s match is to be one of interest. The team favored to win is the Jaguares XV who are expected to be superior in their fire-power and win by 12 points.
