The Kamaishi Recovery Memorial Stadium is ready for RWC 2019. Located in Sendai in Japan’s northeast the venue will play host to two pool matches at this year’s Rugby World Cup tournament.
With a seating capacity of 16,187 spectators the Kamaishi Recovery Memorial Stadium is the only newly constructed RWC 2019 venue. Permanent construction was completed in July 2018 giving the venue a permanent capacity of 6,000.
For RWC 2019 it will have the 10,187 extra seats in the form of temporary seating. They come in the form of two temporary stands which were completed earlier today as reported by Kyodo News.
The venue is located on the grounds of former schools which were destroyed by a violent and deadly tsunami in 2011. Local authorities will be using the occasion of the RWC to pay tribute to the victims.
It is to play host to Uruguay vs Fiji on September 25, and Canada vs Namibia on October 13. Prior to then it will be used as a home venue for Japan in the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup. On July 27 Japan play host to Fiji.
