This past weekend saw history made as Brazil played host to Spain for the first time. The fixture was an important test rugby fixture as it saw two countries seeking qualification for RWC 2019 going at it face-to-face.
Only once before had Brazil and Spain met in a test match. The prior fixture was in Spain which meant that by playing in South America the fixture was to be historic regardless of the result. As it turned out Spain would be given a torrid time in the second half by Brazil with the scrum notably impressive.
The match was one to underline the need for diversity in international competition. It occurred at a time in which there happen to be a range of calls for an overhaul to introduce a Nations Championship. Such calls have not been popular in Tier 2 regions and Brazil vs Spain was a clear reminder why this is the case.
