Club Olimpia will be Paraguay’s team in the Super Liga Sudamericana (SLAR). Confirmation was made today on twitter by Club Olimpia President Marco Trovato.
Written in Spanish Trovato’s tweet read:
“Coming next year, the OLIMPIA Rugby franchise is to compete in the Súper Liga Americana de Rugby as the only team representing Paraguay.”
March 2020 will mark the beginning of the SLAR. As confirmed on Sunday in an official announcement by Sudamérica Rugby the professional South American league will begin with six franchises from the region.
The SLAR is to be run under the central command of Sudamérica Rugby, the regional governing body for South and Central America. It will be run under the official and complete backing of World Rugby, the official global governing body.
The six competition teams for the 2020 season are to come from countries from within this region, with a further two sides to join the competition in 2021. Paraguay’s Club Olimpia is to join Uruguayan clubs Nacional and Peñarol in the SLAR. Of note is that all three are existing professional soccer clubs.
The three remaining teams are yet to be confirmed though they are expected to come from Argentina, Brazil, and Chile though not all of them. Chile is widely thought to miss the inaugural season with a team entering for the 2021 season.
In soccer Club Olimpia has a record of 42 national Paraguayan titles. The club also has a basketball team and now rugby will also fly the colors of Club Olimpia. The club is based in the national capital of Asunción.
