SARugby have confirmed that Argentina will compete in the 2019 Currie Cup. The tournament is South Africa’s premier domestic competition, and takes place during the winter.
Argentina will compete in the First Division, which is in actuality the second division behind that of the Premier Division. The Argentine side will compete under the name Jaguares XV and will be coached by Argentina XV Head Coach Ignacio Fernández Lobbe.
In addition to Argentina the the Currie Cup First Division will also include Namibia. They are to join six South African teams – South Western Districts Eagles, Boland Cavaliers, Down Touch Griffons, Hino Valke, Eastern Province Elephants, and the Leopards.
The Currie Cup Premier Division will consist of the Vodacom Blue Bulls, Xerox Golden Lions, Cell C Sharks, DHL Western Province, Toyota Free State Cheetahs, ISG Pumas and the Tafel Lager Griquas.
Changes from 2018 see the competition moved from 13 July to 7 September, which means that the Currie Cup Premier Division will not overlap with the Rugby World Cup, Vodacom Super Rugby or the Guinness Pro14. The Currie Cup First Division will be played slightly earlier. It is to run from July 06 to August 31.
The UAR will announce the Jaguares’ XV player roster in due course. Players are closely to be based on that which competed as the Argentina XV in the Americas Rugby Championship.
