Chile overpower Brazil in the South American u20s this evening, winning 39-10. The result sees the Chileans finishing in third place in the competition with Brazil claiming fourth place and, with it, the wooden spoon.
Both Chile and Brazil were beaten in their respective prior matches of the competition. Chile fell 38-13 to Uruguay while Brazil were hammered 90-5 by Argentina. Uruguay’s win over Chile saw them qualifying for the 2019 Junior World Trophy in São José dos Campos, Brazil.
Despite being better than Brazil in the South American u20s Chile will not be involved in the Junior World Trophy. This is due to South America being allocated one spot and Brazil qualifying as the host nation.
Chile turned this frustration into their advantage to beat Brazil today by 29 points. Like in the senior men’s fixtures between the sides Brazil was on top in the scrum but the difference was that this weapon would not result in Brazil gaining a notable advantage.
The Chileans played the better rugby against Brazil today, scoring five tries to two. Scrum-half Lukas Carvallo would score the first try to which Brazil were never really able to respond to. As the opening half continued additional tries were scored to open up a 20-5 half time lead.
Fullback Vincente Tredinck left his mark on the match with six successful kicks at goal. It was six more than that managed by Brazil whose tries to Gabriel Quirino, and Murillo Benesso were unconverted. With Tredinck scoring a second half try it was not only clear which team was well on tp of the other but also evident that he was among the top performers.
