DC reveals MLR team name and logo

Washington DC’s future Major League Rugby franchise now has a name and a shiny new logo. The new team, who will officially join the league in the 2020 season, will be called ‘Old Glory DC’ with their new logo featuring a shield design with a silhouette of the Capitol Building and a stylized US flag.

The team was originally unveiled in May of last year as an associate member and was then confirmed as a full member for the 2020 season in November. Co-founders Chris Dunlavey and Paul Sheehy have acquired franchise rights for a large area of the mid-Atlantic region that includes Columbus and nearby Philadelphia, suggesting expansion teams in those locations are unlikely at least in the immediate future.

Finding an appropriate home venue will be a challenge with the team eyeing local college fields as a temporary home until a purpose-built rugby facility can be constructed. Meanwhile more than 1,000 season ticket deposits have already been collected.

The team has also confirmed four upcoming player combines:

March 10 – Fortress Obetz, Columbus

March 17 – The Proving Grounds, Philadelphia

March 24 – Queen’s University Sports Complex, Charlotte

March 31 – Catholic University of America, DC

More information can be found on the newly re-branded website.
