It was billed as a potential World Cup eliminator with two leading candidates for Argentina’s second flyhalf spot going head-to-head. In the end there was only one winner. Benjamín Urdapilleta led the way for Castres as they defeated Patricio Fernández and his Clermont Auvergne side 24-16 on Saturday. The win allowed Toulouse to leap-frog Clermont into first place in the Top 14.
Urdapilleta was outstanding for Castres, playing a role in nearly every score. His inside pass put Armand Batlle in under the posts and quick distribution sent Martin Laveau into the corner for a second try. The 32-year-old added three penalty goals and one conversion.
Fernández meanwhile kicked one early penalty but was forced to leave the field soon after with a strained adductor. He will be hopeful that the injury is not persistent as there is still rugby to be played before Mario Ledesma and his Pumas selectors consider their options for Japan.
