Campeonato Argentino de Mayores Round 1

Round one of Argentina’s national provincial championship, the Campeonato Argentino de Mayores was played this weekend. Also known as the Torneio Argentino de Uniones or the Copa Personal for commercial reasons the competition brings together the leading athletes from nationwide to give them exposure to a higher level competition.

This year the competition is international with Uruguay having been entitled to field a side, the Uruguay XV. Uruguay’s team is mainly developmental with ‘A’ side players dominating the selection. There are, however, places for some senior roster members who were involved in Los Teros’ Rugby World Cup 2015 campaign.

Playing in Group (Zone) B of the Promotional division the Uruguay XV started strongly completing a 35-12 away win against Lagos del Sur in the resort city of Bariloche. Other teams from the division, Sur and Sanjuanina completed narrow victories.

In Zone A Santafesina, Alto Valle and Mar del Plata won their matches with Mar del Plata, like the Uruguay XV doing so away from home. Santafesina and Alto Valla completed tight victories in the  zone’s remaining fixtures.

In the top division, the Championship Zone Buenos Aires left a warning to others by powering to a 46-13 away win over Córoba. Salta also won on the road, beating Rosario 33-27 in a free-flowing encounter. meanwhile the northern powerhouses, Tucumán won 11-6 against Cuyo.

The u21 results were not consistent with those of the seniors. Aside from Tucumán winning cleanly over Cuyo the outcomes were the reserve with Córdoba and Rosario both winning at the expensive of Buenos Aires and Salta.
