Sagario joins new names as Uruguay prepares for ARC

Today sees Uruguay’s preparations for international competition in 2019 officially underway. Uruguay Begin their 2019 regime today at the High Performance Training Center at the Estadio Charrúa with new names and a few surprises.

The 33 players training today under coach Esteban Meneses include returnees Mario Sagario, Nicolás Freitas, and Gonzalo Soto Mera. Sagario and Soto Mera last played for Los Teros in the 2018 Americas Rugby Championship, while Freitas has recovered from shoulder surgery.

Also included are six of Uruguay’s newly-contracted Major League Rugby players. They are Mateo Sanguinetti, Diego Magno, Alejandro Nieto, Rodrigo Silva, Leandro Leivas, and Gastón Mieres. All are to travel to North America over the coming days.

Left out for now are four additional MLR signings – Juan Echeverría, Ignacio Dotti, Santiago Arata, and Andrés Vilaseca. They have already departed Uruguay and are settling in ahead of the upcoming season.

There are six uncapped players in the squad. Teritos graduates Joaquín Jaunsolo, Felipe Aliaga, Santiago Civetta, Santiago Piñeyrúa, and Mateo Mari make their first appearances on a senior roster. Trébol second row Juan Manuel Rodríguez is named after playing for the Sudamérica XV in November, as does once-capped MVCC center Marcos Brovetto.

Uruguay’s first match of 2019 will be on January 24. In a unique contest Los Teros will play host to Argentine Super Rugby side Los Jaguares. For Uruguay it is to serve as a warm-up match for the 2019 ARC. Uruguay open their campaign against Canada in Montevideo on February 2.
