Bordeaux have signed Argentine winger Santiago Cordero from the Exeter Chiefs. The 25-year-old will join the French club on a two-year-deal starting next season. Bordeaux will be Cordero’s third professional club following Los Jaguares (Argentina) and Exeter (England).
Cordero left Los Jaguares for Exeter last January. It came after he had been out of favor with Daniel Hourcade in 2016 and 2017. This remarkable came after his impressive display at RWC 2015 where he scored three tries and made two assists in Argentina’s Quarter Final win over Ireland.
His move to the English Premiership was a short-term move. Yet with him fitting in well Exeter extended his contract to include the 2018-2019 season. The club will be sad to see him moving on to France as his form has been red-hot.
In a recent match against West Country rivals, Gloucester Cordero set a new record for tacklers beaten in a match. Playing right wing Cordero beat 17 defenders. No other player has beaten more than 13 in a Champions Cup game since Opta began recorded data, in the 2009-2010 season.
Cordero has appeared in eleven of the Chiefs’ twelve English Premiership matches for Exeter this season. His return has been five tries and one try assist. His normal club position for Exeter is the right wing though he has also started on both the left wing and at fullback.
His form has not gone unnoticed back in Argentina. He recently earned praise from Gonzalo Quesada, the Head Coach of Los Jaguares. Americas Rugby News agrees and expects Cordero to be selected for RWC 2019. It would be his second RWC.
In announcing the signing Bordeaux noted that Cordero is a wing / fullback. The club is home to the Australian capped Fijian winger Etu Nabuli and former French fullback Nans Ducuing. Cordero will joining them and other internationals including fellow Puma Mariano Galarza at the club.
