Two South Americans Named in Top 14 Team of 2018

Two South American players have been named in the Top 14 team of 2018 by L’Equipe. Castres’ players account for nine of the fifteen players named by the French publication.

Two of the Castres’ players are South American. Second-rower and club captain Rodrigo Capó Ortega (Uruguay), and fly half Benjamín Urdapilleta (Argentina) were named as the best players in 2018 in their respective positions.

Castres were the 2018 French club champions. The small-town side upset favorites Montpellier to win the Top 14 Final. Both Capó Ortega and Urdapilleta started in the final and were prominent. The Argentine was man of the match, a repeat from the Semi Final win over Racing 92.

2019 is RWC year and both players are targeting selection. Capó Ortega played in RWC 2003. An appearance in Japan 2019 would see the Uruguayan setting a world record for time between RWC games. Urdapilleta is in the sights of Los Pumas’ selectors with Gonzalo Quesada having noted him as among the European-Based players in contention.
