Hong Kong will be competing in the 2019 World Rugby Junior World Trophy. Set to take place in Brazil in July, Hong Kong are the third confirmed competitor joining hosts Brazil and the 2018 Junior World Championship relegated Japan.
Hong Kong booked their place in the 2019 tournament by beating Chinese Taipei 38-5 on Tuesday. The result as Hong Kong sealing the Asia Rugby U19 Championship to qualify as the Asia Rugby representative.
While Hong Kong recorded a big win over Chinese Taipei their opening match was a different story. In their first match Hong Kong were beaten 17-13 by South Korea. It was followed by a comprehensive 48-15 win over Sri Lanka.
Both South Korea and Chinese Taipei won their matches against Sri Lanka. As such it was the bonus points which saw Hong Kong finishing in top spot.
The 2019 Junior World Trophy is to be the 12th edition of the tournament. It is to be the fifth edition hosted in the Americas. The inaugural competition in 2008 was played in Chile as was the 2013 tournament. The USA and Uruguay hosted in 2012, and 2017 respectively.
In 2019 it will break new ground with Brazil hosting the event. It is to be played at the Estadio Martins Pereira in São José dos Campos from July 09-21 July, 2019.
The tournament will see Brazil, Japan and Hong Kong will be joined by five additional competitors. They are to come in the form of Oceania Rugby (1), Rugby Afrique (1), Rugby Americas North (1), Rugby Europe (1), and Sudamérica Rugby (1).
