Agustín Creevy is not going anywhere. The former captain of Los Jaguares and Los Pumas will remain a Jaguar for 2019, extending his contract with the UAR. His new deal sees him under contract with the UAR until December 2019.
A move to France has been rumored with Stade Français heading the list of teams reportedly interested in acquiring Creevy. Such a move is possible following RWC 2019. The tournament will be played in September and October of 2019 in Japan.
Creevy captained Argentina from 2014 until October 2018, leading his country in a record 49 test matches. Raúl Pérez named him as captain of Los Jaguares for Super Rugby which saw him in charge of the franchise in the 2016 and 2017 seasons.
The change from Pérez to Mario Ledesma saw Creevy relieved of the captaincy. In his place Pablo Matera took over and this was replicated for Los Pumas with Matera now the national captain.
The retention of Creevy is excellent news for Los Jaguares and Los Pumas. It means the hooker position will have the same coverage in 2019 as was the case this year.
Having held down the starting position for so long Creevy’s understudy Julián Montoya has amassed 51 caps with just four coming in the starting line-up. Creevy has 83 caps with his last bench appearance being vs Namibia in RWC 2015.
New Head Coach Gonzalo Quesada is yet to name a captain or a playing roster for the 2019 season. He is on record as noting the existing lack of a fly half. With the departure of Nicolás Sánchez to Stade Français there are no specialists on the roster on a full-time basis.
Ledesma’s decision to not take Santiago González Iglesias to Europe in November has Joaquin Díaz Bonilla as the favored fly half for Los Jaguares. Quesada named him in addition to Domingo Miotti, Juan Cruz Mallía and González Iglesias as those being looked at for the Jaguares 10 position.
