Canada claimed a silver finish at the Dubai Sevens on Friday. New Zealand proved tops once again, winning their 5th consecutive HSBC circuit title, but the second-place result also bumps the Canadians up into second overall ahead of the USA. The Women’s Eagles would end their Dubai in 4th place.
Ireland proved no match for Canada in the Quarter Final with Bianca Farella grabbing another double. The winger would score in the final minute of play to knock Australia out of the Semi Final. It was a fine tournament for the Canadians but New Zealand remain a step ahead.
The USA held on to scrape by France in the Quarter Final with Alev Kelter’s conversion the difference. They would be no match for New Zealand in the Semi Final, shut out 22-0 by the eventual champions. Australia also skipped past them in the Bronze Final with Lily Dick crossing in stoppage time to steal the victory.
England’s impressive form on Day One faltered first against Australia, and then again in the 5th place final against Russia. Meanwhile core qualifiers China upset Fiji and Spain en route to a Trophy Final victory to the delight of the crowd.
The Series now takes a two month break with the women returning to action in Sydney on February 1.
