Perfect start for Canada Women in Dubai

Canada came through the opening day of the Dubai Sevens with a perfect 3-0 record on Thursday. The second round of the 2018-19 HSBC Women’s Sevens Series saw the USA falling by just two points to England to finish second in Pool B. Both teams move on to the Cup Quarter Finals.

A Julia Greenshields hat trick saw Canada past Fiji with ease in their first match of the tournament. It was Bianca Farella’s turn to emulate that try scoring feat against Spain in the second match, and it would be three different try-scorers against France with Charity Williams speeding away for the match winner late in the second half.

The Women’s Eagles might have frustrated coach Chris Brown but the scoreboard suggested China were not a problem, with Cheta Emba touching down twice in the 31-0 win. She would add one each against England and Australia, the latter a last-minute game winner. Ilona Maher picked up a double in the 22-17 win over the Australians.

New Zealand’s unbeaten record to start the season continued with three more wins. England were the surprise package of Pool B by edging the Eagles to make it a perfect three-from-three, and France finished second to Canada in Pool C with Fiji missing out on the Cup Quarter Finals.

The USA will play France in their first match on Day Two with Canada’s road to the Cup Final starting against Ireland. A live stream will be available to viewers in Canada on the CBC Sports website, with ESPN broadcasting in the USA.
