Perry Baker has once again been honored by World Rugby. The Eagles Sevens star took home his second straight World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year award at the year-end event in Monte Carlo on Sunday. Baker beat out fellow nominees Jerry Tuwai of Fiji and Ben O’Donnell of Australia.
The 32-year-old took home the award despite missing three stops on the 2017-18 circuit. His 37 tries in only 30 games were good enough for 4th overall, the top spot going to Eagles teammate Carlin Isles with 49. The USA would finish in 6th place in both the 2017-18 HSBC season and the Rugby World Cup Sevens hosted by San Francisco’s AT&T Park in July.
Baker earned HSBC Dream Team selections in the Las Vegas and Vancouver stops on the 2017-18 circuit. He also scored the try of the season, a spectacular end-to-end solo effort against Fiji in the Las Vegas Semi Final. Baker was a notable omission in the official HSBC Dream Team for the 2017-18 season.
