New York Returns to Limerick World Club 7s

The New York City 7s is returning to the World Club Sevens tournament in Limerick, Ireland on August 22-23rd. The side, made up of players from the Northeast Academy and National Team prospects, participated in the tournament last year reaching the Cup Quarterfinals. The tournament, staged at historic Thomond Park Stadium in Limerick, brings together some of the top club 7s teams in the entire world.

“We are extremely honored to be invited back to this prestigious event,” says Sean Horan, Director of the Northeast Academy. “The competition will be fierce, as we’ll be competing against some of the greatest club teams from around the world. We are excited for the opportunity and welcome the challenge.”

New York isn’t the only returning team at this year’s event. Fijian side Daveta returns to defend their 2014 Title as well as Buenos Aires whom won the 2014 World Club Sevens Championship at Twickenham. Alongside them, for the first time ever, are all four of the Irish provinces as Munster, Leinster, Connacht, and Ulster are all sending teams to the Limerick World Club Sevens.

New York City had a solid showing at the 2014 Limerick World Club Sevens as they reached the Cup Quarterfinals before losing to Western Province. In the Plate Semifinals, New York toppled the Blue Bulls 15-14 before losing in the Plate Final to Saracens. The side was also one of the big surprises at the 2013 World Club Sevens at Twickenham where New York made it to the Cup round and went on to win the Plate Championship over Gloucester.

With training squads in both New York and Boston, the Northeast Academy is a National Development Academy affiliated with USA Rugby and part of the development pathway for aspiring National Team players. Following USA Eagles High Performance criteria, the Northeast Academy provides players with top level coaching, player identification, player development, and playing competition.
