Erasmus to lead Barbarians against Pumas

Springbok coach Johan ‘Rassie’ Erasmus has been appointed coach of the Barbarians for their match against Argentina on December 1 in London. The invitational side will host the Pumas three years after their last meeting, a 49-31 win for Argentina following the 2015 World Cup.

The news comes in the wake of South Africa’s stunning 36-34 away win against the All Blacks in the Rugby Championship. It marked a complete turnaround for the team that had lost to Argentina in the second round and Australia just the week before.

Erasmus has already recruited four players for the Killik Cup match. Current Springbok stars Tendai Mtawarira, Eben Etzebeth, and Handré Pollard have accepted invitations to play in the match. Wallabies scrumhalf Will Genia will also wear the famous striped jersey.

Some European-based Argentine internationals could well be asked to suit up against their home side if they are not selected for the November tour. Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe, now retired, and Ramiro Herrera played for the Barbarians against England in May.
