The historic Chile vs Maori All Blacks fixture has been confirmed for the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo. The national governing body of Chilean Rugby – Federación de Rugby de Chile made the announcement today on social media.
Located in the Las Condes district of Santiago the Estadio San Carlos de Apoquindo is a soccer stadium owned by the Club Deportivo Universidad Católica. The venue has a seating capacity of 15,000 for sport though has hosted 20,000 for concerts.
The Chile vs Maori All Blacks fixture will be played on November 17 at the venue. Sources have told Americas Rugby News that the Federation de Rugby de Chile will be targeting a record home attendance from the fixture. The unofficial largest recorded crowd is 8,000.
Los Cóndores’ home match against the Maori All Blacks is to be a first. It is the second of two confirmed November Internationals for Chile in 2018. The other is to be against Belgium, also in Chile on November 10.
The home fixture against Belgium is to be the first match in the country against a European opponent since 2013. The last to play in Chile was Spain in 2013 with Los Leones also being the prior visitor to the country, playing in 2007.
Like the Maori All Blacks, Belgium’s appearance is to be a first. It will mark the birth of international competition between the countries. While the home matches serve a purpose within themselves they are to be preparation for Chile ahead of the 2019 Americas Rugby Championship (ARC), the fourth edition of the annual competition.
The Maori All Blacks are to play three November Internationals, all of which will be in the Americas. The first stop will be Chicago on November 03. The Maori All Blacks are to play against the USA at Soldier Field. From there Brazil will host the touring Maori All Blacks on November 10.
