The Round of 16 is complete in the women’s bracket of the Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco. North America’s best hopes Canada and the USA have each progressed but there has been one upset already with Ireland upsetting England 19-14, knocking them out of medal contention.
Canada progressed by defeating Brazil. It was a strong showing from the third-ranked team in the tournament with seven different players touching down. Brazil were second best but showed their ability with ball in hand, with Bianca Silva impressing and scoring two tries in defeat.
The USA had no trouble getting past China. Five players scored tries with Cheta Emba grabbing a late double to round out the 38-7 win. Mexico meanwhile were handed tournament favorites New Zealand in their opening match and try as they might could not get on the scoreboard.
Quarter final match-ups will see Ireland up against New Zealand and Spain taking on Australia. The North American teams will round out the day with Canada drawing France and the USA facing Russia.
