Moriarty Suspended for Four Weeks

Ross Moriarty has been suspended for four weeks by World Rugby. The Welsh no 8 was sent off in the final minute of Wales’ 30-12 win over Argentina in Santa Fé on Saturday.

The incident was referred to an Independent Judicial Committee which determined that Moriarty’s red card was correct and that further disciplinary action is required.

The Independent Judiciary Committee has given Moriaty a four-week suspension for an act of foul play contrary to Law 9.11 (grasping an opponent around the neck area).

Moriarty admitted having committed the act of foul play, accepted that Jaco Peyper’s decision to red card him was correct, and apologized for his actions.

The Independent Judicial Committee deemed the offence to qualify on the mid-range scale of seriousness, which has an entry point of six weeks. They, nonetheless, reduced his suspension from 6 to 4 weeks.

The Independent Judiciary Committee noted that Moriarty did not desist from his actions on the direction of assistant referee Andrew Brace in addition to mitigating factors including the player’s immediate apology and disciplinary record, the player was suspended for a period of four weeks.

The suspension, which is based on Moriarty’s playing schedule, will end following his club’s first match of the 2018-19 PRO14 season.
