Americas Rankings – June 10 2018

Following several weeks without international rugby this weekend saw test matches entering overdrive. There were test matches played in North America, the Caribbean and South America.

The top ranked team from the Americas, Argentina had home advantage on Saturday against Wales. The match did not go to plan for Los Pumas with Wales up to the task and proving to having done their homework effectively.

Wales completed a 23-10 victory to hand Argentina a reality check and question Daniel Hourcade as Argentina’s coach. Having had seven months to prepare for the match his strategy was a disaster. Wales’ win sees Argentina falling below Fiji in the World Rankings to 10th and now having 77.54 points, a drop from 78.22.

The no 2 ranked country from the Americas, the USA had no such issues in claiming victory this weekend. A highly impressive performance from the Eagles saw them downing Russia 62-13. It was the largest ever win by the Eagles over Russia. The result sees the teams exchanging 0.16 points with the USA rising to 69.39 points.

Canada’s heavy 48-10 defeat against Scotland sees no change to the ranking of either country. This is based on the positions of both going into the match. Had Canada completed either a victory or a draw then the rankings would have been impacted.

Uruguay’s heroics in the Nations Cup had no impact on the Americas Rankings or the World Rankings. This is a reflection of Uruguay playing against ‘A’ side rather than test teams in the competition. Uruguay’s victories over the Fiji Warriors, Emerging Italy, and the Argentina XV were not capped internationals.

In the RAN Championship the Cayman Islands were given a run for their money by Bermuda. The nail-biter saw the Caymans espying with a 20-19 victory. The narrow victor was insufficient to alter the ranking of either competitor.

Further east Guadeloupe’s upset 39-17 victory over the Dominican Republic sees Guadeloupe gaining maximum rankings points. The updated Americas Rankings  – June 10 2018 see Guadeloupe climbing from 28.41 to a new ranking of 30.71 points. The Dominican Republic fall from 30.76 to 28.46 points.

The Americas Rankings will be updated again next Sunday. There will again be plenty of international rugby taking place with Argentina, Canada and the USA all at home against Wales, Russia, and Scotland respectively.

Costa Rica continues to be ranked on 32.16 points. This is the case despite the country having gained World Rugby membership in November 2017. Upon gaining World Rugby membership unions enter the World Rankings and do so with a 30.00 ranking.
