Canada and USA into Paris Cup Quarters

For a second consecutive HSBC Sevens Series tournament both Canada and the USA have qualified for the Cup Quarter Finals. The North American sides each advanced from the pool stages with two wins out of three, the Eagles finishing their opening day undefeated with only a draw with England standing in the way of a perfect start.

Canada came flying out of the gate with a dominant 33-7 win over Russia, and followed it up in convincing fashion by beating Scotland 26-14. Justin Douglas grabbed a hat trick in the second match, but nobody would make it over the line against South Africa. The defending Sevens Series champions, stung by an upset loss to the Scots, found another gear against Canada and came away 28-0 victors.

The USA also started in impressive fashion, pushing through Argentina and France by similar scores of 26-7 and 26-12. Stephen Tomasin and Carlin Isles picked up three tries apiece between the two matches. Their last pool match saw them come back from a 21-7 deficit with late scores by Madison Hughes and Kevon Williams earning the draw.

Los Pumas continue to disappoint with three losses on Day One. They had little to show from their match against the Eagles and then fell to England by 28-19. They showed character to come back from a 28-7 hole against hosts France but ultimately came up one conversion short.

Elsewhere Kenya stunned Fiji in Pool A to end the current Series leaders winning streak at 21 games. Fiji recovered to beat New Zealand and secure their spot in the Quarter Finals. Ireland’s remarkable form continued as they went undefeated on Day One, defeating Spain and Australia with a tie against Wales.

Canada will try and derail the men in green in their Quarter Final on Day Two, while the USA have drawn New Zealand. Argentina will contest the Trophy Quarter Final against Kenya.
