Game two of the 2018 Nations Cup saw the hosts Uruguay taking-on the Fiji Warriors. It was close to Uruguay’s test side taking on Fiji’s official ‘A’ team. With the senior sided having met in RWC 2015 and set to do so again in RWC 2019 it was an important fixture for both countries.
In Milton Keynes, England during RWC 2015 the Fijians were better across the board. The gulf between the teams was clear. On Saturday in Montevideo, however, this was very different. The hard work put in by the players and the professional set-up was clear.
Uruguay’s athletes were notably better physically. Fiji’s players, by way of comparison, suffered from fatigue as the match went on.
The match was played in a traditional rugby surface feature not only wet weather but also plenty of mud. Uruguay played better to the conditions and succeeded in gaining the upper hand in the second half. Hard work from the forwards enabled Felipe Berchesi to kick Uruguay into a commanding lead while a late try sealed what was an impressive home win.
