Americas Rankings – May 13 2018

A busy weekend of international competition has come to an end in the Americas. In all seven matches were played. The Americas Rankings – May 13 2018 have been updated to take into account the points exchanged.

The opening international of the weekend was played on Friday. Guadeloupe had home advantage against Curaçao. The match was the first for Guadeloupe since Americas Rankings began and as such the home side’s 7-5 defeat sees a new ranking of 28.41 points. Curaçao benefit, rising from 39th, or bottom, in the Americas to overtake Guadeloupe, Panama and El Salvador.

On Saturday in the Caribbean Barbados fell to a 29-37 home defeat against Jamaica. The result saw Jamaica winning the RAN Cup and with it promotion to the 2019 RAN Championship. The 12 point win sees Jamaica rising to a new ranking of 40.69 points while Barbados fall from 35.41 to 34.55 points. As such Barbados fall to 18th and Jamaica close in on Venezuela’s hold on 13th position.

Bermuda’s 28-48 defeat at the hands of the USA South Panthers sees no change in the Americas Rankings. The USA South Panthers are not a test side and, as such, no rankings points are up for grabs in matches in which they are involved in. With it Bermuda remain in 15th between Jamaica and Peru.

The Turks & Caicos Islands had a home international on Saturday. Their 63-12 defeat of the British Virgin Islands sees rankings points being exchanged between the unions. For the visitors from the British Virgin Islands the occasion was the first time they have played an international since Americas Rankings began.

The updated Americas Rankings see the Turks & Caicos Islands rising from 33.53 to 34.04 points. It sees the Flamingoes overtaking the Bahamas and Guatemala. The British Virgin Islands have an new ranking of 29.48 points, making them 34th in the Americas Rankings.

In South America there were three matches played this weekend. In Buenos Aires the Argentina XV fell to a shock 36-33 defeat against Brazil. The loss was unthinkable after the Argentina XV led 33-3 at half time. Brazil dominated the final quarter to complete a miraculous comeback. With it not being Los Pumas no rankings points were exchanged.

In Montevideo the Uruguay XV fell to a 22-20 defeat at the hands of Chile. Uruguay had four of their professional players involved yet did not allocated test match status to the fixture. With it not being Los Teros neither side has been effected by the result.

Ranking points were on the line in Asunción. The classic encounter that unfolded saw Paraguay winning 28-26 over Colombia, requiring a comeback and a late penalty to seal the narrow victory. The rankings points exchanged between the countries see Paraguay gaining 0.68 points to rise to a new ranking of 49.22. Colombia fall to 47.68.

The Americas Rankings will be updated again next Sunday. They will take into account the Sudamericano 6 Naciones A matches of Chile vs Paraguay and Brazil vs Colombia. In the Caribbean Trinidad & Tobago host Bermuda.

Costa Rica continues to be ranked on 32.16 points. This is the case despite the country having gained World Rugby membership in November 2017. Upon gaining World Rugby membership unions enter the World Rankings and do so with a 30.00 ranking.
