Italy have suffered a major blow to their World Cup chances as the vastly experienced Andrea Masi has been ruled out with a snapped Achilles tendon suffered against France. Zebre winger Michele Visentin, one of the last cut from the training group, has been called up as a replacement, and may not be the only one required with a couple others still on the treatment table.
First choice centre Luca Morisi was ruled out with a knee injury before the tournament, and Gonzalo García remains a serious doubt to take part in the match against Canada on Saturday with an ankle injury. Tommaso Benvenuti missed out on the test against Les Bleus but is expected to be ready for the vital weekend match at Elland Road.
The speedy Visentin made his Italy debut in February against Scotland, but has not been selected in the match day roster since. Benetton Treviso outside back Simone Ragusi was the other alternative, with his ability to cover fullback seen as a strong quality.
The news brings a bitter end to Masi’s fourth World Cup, and at 34 years old and now facing months in recovery, may in fact bring a close to his outstanding international career. The Wasps star made his Italian debut in 1999, with Saturday’s match the 95th test in Azzurri colours.
