Puma Santiago Cordero has extended his contract with the Exeter Chiefs. The 24-year-old has signed a new one-year deal to remain at the West Country club until June 2019.
Cordero joined the Exeter Chiefs earlier this year after two years with Los Jaguares. The move has seen him featuring regularly for the English Club and he already has a club title, the 2018 Anglo-Welsh Cup.
In moving away from Argentina other players have had increased opportunities for Los Jaguares. In the 2018 season Mario Ledesma has given starts to Emiliano Boffelli, Sebastián Cancelliere, Bautista Delguy, and Ramiro Moyano. Int he most recent match he also used Juan Cruz Mallía from the bench against the Chiefs.
Cordero’s move has therefore served both parties well. With Argentina set to allow for European-Based players to again be selected for Los Pumas Cordero is likely to continue his test career in 2018.
Cordero made his debut for Los Pumas against England in November 2013, doing so as a teenager. He has gone on to earn 33 caps and has scored 11 tries for his country thus far.
Naturally a fullback, Cordero has featured mostly as a winger for Argentina and Los Jaguares. At Exeter he has had the opportunity to play in both positions. The loss of Joaquín Tuculet this year through injury makes Cordero extra valuable to Daniel Hourcade. He started Cordero at fullback against England in November 2016.
