Americas teams struggle in Singapore

It was not a good Day One for the three Americas teams at the Singapore Sevens. All have failed to reach the Cup Quarter Finals with only two wins spread between them, one of them Canada’s win over Argentina. After a promising start to the 2017-18 HSBC Sevens Series recent results from the Americas teams have been disappointing.

Canada’s post-Moonlight existence started on a winning note as they defeated Argentina in their opening match. It was not without controversy as Pumas halfback Lautaro Bazán received not one but two questionable yellow cards, the second seeing him sent off though he would receive no further sanctioning from the tournament judiciary.

South Africa were two powerful for the Canadians as were an improved Samoa side. With coach Gordon Tietjens under pressure for a string of poor showings, the Samoans throttled the Pumas as well to earn their spot in the Quarter Finals as the second best side in Pool C.

Like Canada, the USA started the day well with a big win over a hapless French side but then stumbled out of the gates against England and could not recover in the second half. By their third game they had faded badly with Kenya swatting them aside with ease.

The Eagles will square off against Los Pumas in the Trophy Quarter Final with one team now destined for a bottom-four finish. Canada will attempt to stay out of the dungeons against France.

Front runners for Cup glory after Day One were Fiji, England, South Africa, and Australia, the latter upsetting New Zealand in Pool D to come through unbeaten.
