Referees have been appointed for the upcoming Sudamericano 6 Naciones. Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay and Uruguay will compete in the inaugural South American Six Nations Championship.
The new competition replaces the former South American A Championship with Colombia and Paraguay promoted from the regional ‘B’ competition. Both Argentina and Uruguay are fielding non-test sides. They are to compete as the Argentina XV and the Uruguay XV respectively. As such rankings points will not count in matches involving either side.
The Sudamericano 6 Naciones kicks-off on May 05 in Medellín, Colombia. The opening fixture will see Los Tucanes playing host to the Uruguay XV at Cincuentenario. The Uruguay XV will also play in the closing match, doing so in Buenos Aires.
Colombia are pooled in the Western Conference while the Uruguay XV are in the Eastern. Joining Colombia are the Argentina XV and Chile while the Uruguay XV is grouped with Brazil and Paraguay.
The competition will see a total of nine matches played. Involved are to be seven referees with Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay represented. For Chile the inclusion of Frank Mendez marks an important breakthrough as Chilean officials have not officiated matches in the Americas Rugby Championship (ARC).
Henrique Platais will referee the tournament opener in Colombia and he will return to officiate the final fixture, this time in Argentina. Despite being a Brazilian he, notably, officiates matches in Spanish not Portuguese or English.
