The USA salvaged a 9th place Trophy Final victory on Day Two of the Kitakyushu Sevens after missing out on the Cup Quarter Finals on Day One. A resounding win over Japan in their first game of the day matched them with Ireland. Two tries from captain Nicole Heavirland proved the difference as they finished the tournament on a high.
Canada meanwhile slumped to 11th place in their worst ever finish on the HSBC Women’s Sevens Series. A loss to Ireland in extra time knocked them out of the Trophy Final and they were instead consigned to play hosts Japan in the last-place seeding match. Having already lost captain Ghislaine Landry before Day One, they were forced to finish the tournament without Britt Benn and Caroline Crossley as well.
Commonwealth Games champions New Zealand continued their good form, finishing the tournament unbeaten to gain ground on overall leaders Australia. France’s Cup Final appearance moves them ahead of Canada into 4th place overall while Spain leap-frog the USA into 6th after making the Bronze Final.
The Women’s Series now takes a two-week break before reconvening in Canada for the Langford Sevens beginning on Saturday, May 12.
