Round One of the 2018 South American u20’s produced some noteworthy results. Coming out with wins were Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay. Their respective victories came against Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil.
Taking place at the Estadio Héroes de Curupayti in Asunción, Paraguay there were two lopsided matches and one which went down to the wire.
Day One started with Chile hammering Venezuela. Chile dominated the match, defeating Venezuela 119-0. In game two Uruguay were also rampant against Colombia. Los Teritos ran out 99-5 winners, underlining the gulf between the Americas Rugby Championship (ARC) members and the rest. Or so it appeared.
In the final match on Day One Paraguay went up against Brazil. At the half way point Brazil appeared on course for a computable victory. The Brazilians led 13-5 and were having the better of play in general.
Yet with Paraguay’s scrum delivering a spirited comeback from the hosts saw Paraguay toppling Brazil 25-23. A thrilling final ten minutes saw the lead changing hands on three occasions. Ultimately Marcelo Matiauda would kick the winning points for the hosts.
